A few months ago my brother-in-law took some pictures of my wife and I on the bike. Luckily the bike wasn’t too dirty. He picked a great location with torn up pavement and asphalt in the background that really gave the pictures a fun touch. We had a lot of fun taking pictures on the bike.

Fall Colors

My favorite time to head out on the bike is in the fall. Although the mornings can be brisk, the afternoons and evenings are a perfect time to hit the road. The fall colors are an added bonus, but when is the best time to go?

I did some research online and found a great map from Accuweather.com that shows where and when the colors can be seen:

Highway 12 (Torrey to Panguitch)

Whenever I find myself near Capitol Reef or Bryce Canyon National Park I always yearn for a ride on highway 12. This is one of the best rides Southern Utah has to offer. It passes through valleys, over plateaus and provides picturesque views.

Blanding to Hanksville (SR-95)

Warning: There is NO gas between Blanding and Hanksville. (at least last time I was there)

This is a great ride through south-eastern Utah. The beautiful sandstone has been beautifully carved for some great views. You’ll pass through some canyons and over Lake Powell. The last time I did this ride we got caught in a major rainstorm, so be prepared for what Mother Nature has to offer.

Logan Canyon (Highway 89 - Logan to Garden City)

Logan canyon has many things to offer including camping, hiking, fishing, and of course scenic drives. This road winds along the Logan river for much of the ride, the same river that carved the steep canyon out of the hard limestone walls. When you get to the summit and begin the decent you will have a great view of the beautiful Bear Lake. Be sure to get a great raspberry shake when you get to Bear Lake!

Mt. Nebo Loop

This is an amazing ride with amazing fall colors. You’ll twist and climb to over 9,000 feet for some picturesque overlooks as you pass through the Uinta National Forest. Mt. Nebo is 11,928 feet tall, and is the tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range.

Be sure and pack a camera for this adventure, as there are many overlooks and wonderful viewing opportunities. Sights include Devil’s Kitchen, Walker Flat and Mt. Nebo Wilderness.

Mirror Lake Scenic Byway (SR-150)

The “Mirror Lake Highway” is a beautiful ride through the Uinta Mountains. This road winds up Bald Mountain Pass to an elevation of 10,687 feet. Expect to see some breathtaking views, picnic areas, and possibly some wild-life. Kamas is a great small town with several good places to eat, expect to see a lot of bikes on these roads in the summer, especially on the weekend!

Ogden River Scenic Byway (SR-39)

This is a fun ride winding through the narrow Ogden canyon, past sparkling Pineview reservoir and up into the Hills Past Monte Cristo Peak (~9000 feet). There are breathtaking views and fun curvy turns!

Alpine Loop

This is a beautiful ride through the Uintah National Forest with great mountain views, twisty roads and a great view of Mount Timpanogos . This is a nice cool ride, a nice way to get away on a hot summer day! Although this area does require a day-use fee, I’ve been able to tell the ranger that I am JUST driving through and haven’t had to pay. I’ve done this ride many times. L-3 Communications 6th Annual Ride

The 6^th Annual L-3 Communications Motorcycle Ride, A RIDE FOR “LOVE”, is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2008. This Ride is sponsored by L3 Communications, and all the proceeds will be going to a local family in need. The ride itself will cost $30/person, which includes a T-shirt, ride pin, and the cost of lunch. There will also be the following events to help earn more money for this charity event:

Raffle: This event will be open to everyone who would like to help contribute to the Love family but do not have a bike to ride. The cost will be $5.00 for 6 tickets or $1.00 per ticket. This will be done the morning of the ride (July 19^th) starting after registration is complete (9:00 a.m.) Come down, check out the bikes, and possibly win a nice prize.

Bug Card Contest: Sponsored by Golden Spike Harley Davidson of Ogden: $5.00 entry fee per card.

50/50 Poker Ride: This is where 50% of the money received goes to the Love family and 50% to one lucky winner. There is a $5.00 entry fee per hand, with an opportunity to buy a 6^th card at an extra $5.00. That way if you have a great hand going, and your 5^th card is bad, you have the opportunity to try for a 6^th card to better your hand.

50/50 Draw: Similar to the above Poker ride, but if you don’t want to do a Poker hand you can buy a ticket for $5.00 to be entered into this drawing.

Now! Here is the information on “The Ride” itself:

Check-in will take place at the L-3 TMET Compound (North East area of L3 or just look for the bikes!) from 8am to 9am and the ride begins at the completion of the Raffle. We hope this year’s ride will be relaxing and fun for everyone. Below is the PRELIMINARY route:

Here is the information received from Cyd about the ride:

Meet at L-3, we’ll either take I-215 and take the Airport exit west, or head out on 2200 West to North Temple and then head west towards Reno. We’ll drive to the Tooele Exit and take that exit off on SR-36. Turn left at the Grantsville turn off where we will go into Grantsville, and fill up with Gas at the Chevron (it will be mandatory that every bike top off their tanks at this stop due to the lack of gas stations from here). This will also be a poker stop. We’ll head out the back way out of Grantsville and catch I-80 towards Wendover. Take Exit 77, which is the Dugway/Rowley exit. We’ll turn left towards Iosepa and Skull Valley. End up at the top of Johnson’s pass and the entrance to Dugway Proving Grounds. We will not be going on base. That would only happen if we had a dire emergency. We’ll head down Johnson’s pass into Clover, UT and stop at the little General Store in Clover (still working details with them to use their area for a poker stop). Then we will head out past Penny’s into Stockton, then into Tooele, where by that time everyone will need to probably fill tanks again, because it will be about 100 to 110 miles from the Grantsville stop.

Lunch is still being worked with two different restaurants so we’re not sure if we’ll be staying in Tooele to have lunch or heading back into Salt Lake to have lunch. So this is still an issue that I’m working, so more to follow. But that about sums it up. It will give everyone some straight road riding and some curves that everyone seems to enjoy. It’s a nice ride we’ve done it a couple of times planning this event to just get the different gas mileage. I think you’ll enjoy it.
